Becoming a Competition / Show Steward
Do you have interest in supporting the equine community and encouraging active participation in sanctioned NLEA shows? Do you have competition interest? Show Stewards play an integral role at competitions where there is a need for someone who can focus on animal welfare and ensure fair competition for all.
The Show Steward is responsible for upholding and enforcing the rules of the NLEA Terra Nova Series rulebook.
The NLEA will provide successful candidates with training and mentoring opportunities and Show Stewards will be compensated for their time at sanctioned NLEA shows by receiving a monetary day fee of $100.00 (subject to change).
Duties of the Show Steward
Show Stewards interpret and enforce the Terra Nova Series rulebook and ensure fair competition for all riders. Duties may include, but are not restricted to the following:

Duties of the Show Steward
Show Stewards interpret and enforce the Terra Nova Series rulebook and ensure fair competition for all riders. Duties may include, but are not restricted to the following:
- Protect the interests of the exhibitors, judges and show management.
- Investigate and act upon any alleged violations without waiting for a formal protest.
- Monitor the warm-up arena for illegal or unsafe behavior.
- Inspect equipment and deny participation in a class if there are equipment violations.
- Deny participation to any athlete who violates the rules, is deemed to be acting unsafely or acts inhumanely to any horse.
- Investigate horses who appear to be unsound and bring to the judges attention.
- Stop a class in the event a horse or rider should be considered unsafe.

Interested candidates for Show Steward Positions are required to complete and submit the following:
The Show Steward must have the following qualifications:
- Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the Terra Nova Series Rulebook.
- Must be a member in good standing with the NLEA and be at least 19 years of age.
- Must have ample knowledge of equines and prior riding experience.
- Previous competition experience is considered an asset.
- Have no conflict of interest with participants. (i.e. a coach of a student competition)
- Be available to attend NLEA sanctioned shows.
- Good interpersonal communication skills and experience with conflict management.
